I recently watched a video where a creator purchased a mystery safety keychain package for $32 and reviewed the items inside. First, I have to say that the price was actually very reasonable for what she received. A $32 mystery package is only a few dollars more than my own 10-piece mystery scoop, and I work hard to keep my prices affordable — probably lower than I should.

Many small businesses like mine are not trying to overcharge customers. We are trying to create a fun experience while offering quality products at a fair price.

What Comes Inside a Mystery Safety Keychain Package?

The mystery package featured in the video contained many of the same types of items offered in my own mystery scoops, including:

• Window breakers

• And other surprise accessories

The part of the video that bothered me was not that the creator reviewed the package. Honest reviews are important. The problem was the way the value of the products was calculated.

Before filming, the items had already been individually priced so the creator could announce the supposed total retail value of everything inside. According to the video, the $32 mystery package contained only $19 worth of products.

However, this is a misunderstanding of how retail pricing actually works.

Understanding Wholesale Cost vs. Retail Value

The individual cost of products is not the same thing as the value of a finished mystery package.

When a small business purchases inventory, we do not simply buy one item at a time. We have to purchase products in bulk to receive wholesale pricing. Then we have additional costs, including:

• Inventory purchases
• Shipping supplies
• Packaging materials
• Website fees
• Payment processing fees
• Time spent creating and promoting products
• Trips to the post office
• Customer service
• Free gifts and promotional items
• Coupon discounts

All of these expenses are part of running a small business.

Imagine walking into Walmart and buying a purse priced at $32. Would it make sense for someone to tell you, “That purse only cost the store $19, so you’re being ripped off”?

Of course not.

The store may have purchased 100 purses for $1,900, bringing the wholesale cost down to $19 each. But that does not include the store’s employees, rent, utilities, marketing, shipping, and other business expenses.

The same principle applies to mystery scoops and mystery boxes.

The reason mystery scoop businesses can offer dozens of different items in a package is because we purchase inventory in larger quantities. Buying in bulk allows us to keep prices affordable while still offering customers exciting surprises.

The money customers pay does not go directly into our pockets as profit.

Behind every mystery scoop is a lot of work:

• Ordering inventory
• Inspecting items
• Organizing supplies
• Creating mystery combinations
